What role should genetics play?

There seemed to be many very different ideas about what genetics could tell us, how important it is to guiding conservation programs, and how it could be explicitly incorporated into translocation policy and implementation.

Is the genetic diversity/identity of potenital source populations relative to natural populations of a reintroduction site essential knowledge? desirable? relevant to very rare species (i.e those with very limited potential source stock and large disjunctions in distribution)?
