Imbophorus aptalis (Walker, 1864)

Synonymy

  • Aciptilus aptalis Walker, 1864
  • Alucita aptalis (Walker, 1864)
  • Pterophorus aptalis (Walker, 1864)

Morphology

Diagnose: Exp. 17-25.

Diagnosis: Wingspan 17-25. Forewing yellowish, split to just halfway. A brown mark is located inside the cleft. A total of four spots are distributed on the front lobe. The first two are located on the costal margin, the third, which is most strongly marked, is found on the inner edge, and the outermost is in the distal field, just inside the tip of the segment. There are two spots on the inner edge of the rear lobe. Another is found at the tip of the lobe. The entire fringe of both the front and the rear wings is whitish. Brown scales are also extensively scattered through the scaling on the underside of the forewing from the base as far as the cleft.

The hind wings are somewhat lighter than the forewings. The first two lobes are speckled with brown scales from the clefts. All have an obscure spot at their outermost tip. Their undersides are covered with brown scales.

Vertex, forehead, abdomen, antennae, palpi and hind legs yellowish. Abdomen without drawing elements, 3 segment of palpi 2/3. The inner of the spurs at the end of the hind legs is longer than the outer spur. The bristles on the antennae contrast with those of Imbophorus pallidus. The individual bristles project at an angle of 30° from, and measure about 2/3 of the length of, the flagellomeres.

Life Cycle

Larvae of Imbophorus aptalis have been collected from the underside of leaves of Astrotricha floccosa (Araliaceae).

ANIC has the following records:

Locality Date Stage Host
Five Fords, ACT August 1960 Reared Astrotricha ledifolia
6.5km E of Toowoomba, QLD July 1984 Larvae, pupa Astrotricha latifolia

A card in ANIC describes the larva as "pale green, exceedingly spiny".
